General practice in Belgium faces major challenges as well as unique opportunities. During this first National Congress ‘General Practice in Belgium: Bridging Practices’, we bring together GPs from Flanders, Brussels and Wallonia around one central question:
How can we shape high-quality general practice in Belgium today and tomorrow, across language and regional boundaries? This congress explicitly focuses on exchange between North and South, creating space for dialogue, inspiration and collaboration. The programme combines practice-oriented sessions with current societal themes and forward-looking innovations in primary care.
What to expect?
- Practical workshops with immediately applicable insights
- Exchange of ideas and networking between colleagues from all regions
- Plenary keynotes and debates on current primary care challenges
- Exhibition area, networking opportunities and inspiring field examples

Session 1 – choice of 2 workshops
Workshop 1: Prescribing PrEP in general practice
Speakers: Dr Pierre-Louis Deudon · Dr. Prof. Dirk Avonts
How can you integrate PrEP smoothly and safely into your practice? This interactive session provides a practical guide on indications, prescribing regimens (daily and on-demand), reimbursement and follow-up. We compare approaches in Flanders and Wallonia and discuss how to lower barriers for vulnerable groups.
Workshop 2: SOS in nursing homes – managing crisis situations
Speakers: Dr Peter Missotten · Dr Isabelle Lupant
What do you do when a crisis escalates in a residential care home? Starting from recognisable cases, we clarify roles (GP, coordinating physician, care home team, family, etc.). You will leave with concrete agreements and key considerations to strengthen collaboration, as well as insights into approaches across regions.
10:00–11:30
Plenary opening
Welcome: Dr Maaike Van Overloop (Chair, Domus Medica) & Dr Aurore Girard (Chair, SSMG)
Keynote: Minister Frank Vandenbroucke

13:00–14:00
Session 2 – choice of 4 workshops
Workshop 3: Growing quality in general practice
Speakers: Dr Virginie De Ridder · Jo Van Hoof
How can you make quality improvement feasible in a busy practice? We explore the Recommendations for High-Quality General Practice (Domus Medica & SSMG) and translate these into concrete improvement steps. Bring your own examples: we learn from each other’s approaches and contexts.
Workshop 4: Cancer screening – we need you!
Speakers: Dr Jean Benoit Burrion · Dr Patrick Martens · Dr Michel Candeur
Screening saves lives, but only if it is effectively implemented. You will receive a clear overview of programmes, their scientific basis and—above all—practical tools to inform, motivate and follow up patients. Concrete data and examples will show where your impact as a GP is greatest.
Workshop 5: Return to work
Speaker: Dr Maaike Van Overloop
Returning to work after illness requires alignment between patient, employer and care providers. This workshop focuses on the GP’s role, communication and feasible step-by-step approaches.
Workshop 6: New technologies and tools in general practice
Speakers: Dr Stijn Van Driessche · Wil Rijnen
What are the possibilities of AI in general practice, and how do you get started with these new tools in your own practice? Through a broad overview of new technologies and concrete experiences from practice, we inform and inspire general practitioners and practice staff in this session on how AI can provide support with medical as well as administrative and logistical tasks.
14:00–15:00
Session 3 – choice of 4 workshops
Workshop 7: Planetary health – One Health
Speakers: Dr John Pauluis · Dr Carmen Binst
Climate and environment have a direct impact on health. You will gain insight into the GP’s role in current climate challenges and learn to work with practical awareness tools for yourself and your patients. Includes exchange on what works in practice across regions.
Workshop 8: Practice nurses in Belgian primary care – myth versus reality
Speakers: Dr Marieke Geijsels · Dr Isabelle Heymans
Are practice nurses a luxury or a necessity? Through an interactive format, we challenge common beliefs, confront data and discuss experiences from different regions and practice types. We explore role definitions, time savings versus costs, and what it really takes to build a strong team. Expect honest insights, practical examples, and a fresh perspective on how practice nurses can help shape the future of primary care. This session is aimed at general practitioners who want to explore collaborating with a nurse.
Workshop 9: A palliative approach in heart failure
Speakers: Dr Vincent Momin · Dr Gert Huysmans
How do you integrate a palliative approach in patients with heart failure? We discuss when and how to adjust treatment with a focus on comfort and quality of life, and which tools are available. Collaboration with stakeholders (including palliative care networks) and regional exchange are addressed.
Workshop 10: Hello bonjour? Communication between healthcare professionals in 2026
Speakers: Dr Philippe Jongen · Dr Anthony Dheere · Dr Stijn Van Driessche
Digital communication between healthcare professionals: where do we stand in 2026, what works today and where are we heading? We present innovative systems in Flanders, Brussels and Wallonia and test them using realistic cases (e.g. a patient on holiday or care via out-of-hours services). You will take home key considerations for smooth cross-regional collaboration.
